LG’s all new KF510 to be showcased at Mobile World Congress 2008

If I had to name one mobile company of all for most innovative designs in recent past then without doubt it’ll be LG. They have certainly improved a lot with time. Their mobile phones have gone from shear wastage to total ownage.

LG will soon be launching KF510 slider phone. It is equipped with 3 MP autofocus camera and boasts of a cool touch sensitive keypad on the outside. This innovative touchpad uses ‘Interactive Touch Lighting’ technology and hence KH510 is taglined as ‘Touch Lighting Phone.’
No details have been released yet as this phone will be soon showcased at Mobile World Congress 2008 which will be held at Barcelona. Hopefully, KF510 will go on sale for around $330 in March.

Will Samsung G810 challenge Nokia N95?

By now, most people across the world have a certain regard for the brand name ‘Nokia’, that it is almost difficult to compete with anything churned out by them with decent quality and good performance. The problem though has been that sometimes it seems that either the design team of Nokia is either stuck in a time capsule or just feeding of past reputation. These days they just are not the same as they were when they started out. But then I’m sure there are plenty out there that disagree. But with the launching of the N series Nokia seems to have turned the corner finally. The N95 is truly a multimedia delight. It virtually has blown away all competition in its category and almost stands alone. Samsung is now at least attempting to try and challenge that monopoly by making a tweak to the Samsung G800. The Samsung G810 is nothing more than the Samsung G800 with the addition of Wi-Fi. The Samsung G800, a 5-megapixel 3.5G camera phone with a 3x optical zoom lens already has been dubbed as the ‘Photographer’s delight’. But many users have already claimed otherwise.

The G810 also has a slightly larger screen than its predecessors. The new screen is 2.6 inches and beyond this there is not much change. One still would feel that Samsung is aiming too high with the G810 if it believes that the new version can challenge the N95. But with more and more people exploring beyond the traditional ‘Nokia Choice’, the G810 has a fair chance. Wish I could get a bit of a trial, especially since I’m stuck with a 2.2-megapixel camera phone.

Apple, O2 to launch 16GB iPhone in the UK for £329

Apple is all set to increase the storage space of its iPhone. The 8GB iPhone currently available has been updated to 16GB and will be available in the UK, as confirmed by Pocket-Lint, via O2 stores. The increased storage space means more videos, songs and photos. The confirmed price is $599, that is nearly a hundred dollars more than the 8GB iPhone.

Greg Joswiak, Apple’s vice president of Worldwide iPod and iPhone Product Marketing, says, “For some users, there’s never enough memory”, however, those who are satisfied with their 8GB iPhones might not find it necessary to spend more for more storage capacity.

Apple opens iPhone software to outside developers

Apple is opening its iPhone software to outside developers in an effort to make the hot devices even more popular and wrest market share from "smart phone" market king BlackBerry.
Apple executives unveiled an iPhone software development kit created to let programmers craft programs for the touch-screen mobile devices combining telephone, video, music, and Internet connectivity.
Apple chief executive Steve Jobs said it wasn't unfettering iPhones completely and that software creations would be vetted before being made available exclusively at a newly-launched online App Store."We think this is going to be a boon for developers," Jobs said during an invitation-only preview of the kit at Apple's headquarters in Cupertino, California."Hopefully, people will think iPhones are even more valuable and buy more of them. This is not an open source project, it is a for-profit project."Renowned Silicon Valley venture capitalist John Doerr, a partner at Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, joined Jobs to announce that his company started an "iFund" to finance entrepreneurs developing programs for the iPhone platform."Today we are witnessing history; the launch of the SDK for iPhone," Doerr said. "New platforms are very rare but they can be transformational."Doerr said is starting the iFund with 100 million dollars for investments, saying Amazon was funded with only eight million dollars and Google with 24 million dollars."That should be enough to start about a dozen Amazons or even four Googles," Doerr quipped. "If we start running out of money, we will look around for some more."Applications crafted for iPhones will also work on iPod Touch models, which are basically iPhones without the telephone capabilities, according to Jobs.Apple will let developers set prices for their applications and give them 70 percent of sales, keeping the remainder to run the App Store.Software for engineers to develop programs in a virtual iPhone model on Macintosh computers is available from Apple's website.Programming wizards can work on actual iPhones by registering in a developers program at Apple for 99 dollars. Registering in the program lets Apple keep track of who makes which programs, Jobs said."If they write a malicious application we track them down and tell their parents," Jobs joked while explaining why developers have to register to make iPhone programs."We will turn off the spigot and no one else will get it."The iPhone developers kit has been given to thousands of programmers for beta testing, Jobs said."
The iPhone was a game-changer," Gartner analyst Van Baker said after watching the demonstration. "This just adds a lot of momentum to it."The software developers kit will be rolled out as part the iPhone 2.0 softgrade upgrade. The upgrade includes improvements aimed at winning the business of business people. IPhones have 21 percent of the US "smart phone" market, second only to the 41 percent market-share held by BlackBerry devices made by Canadian firm Research In Motion, according to Jobs. Apple said it worked with Microsoft to enable iPhones to receive email, contact and calendar information "pushed" from business computer networks using the US software giant's popular Office Exchange programs. Jobs pointed out that while emails routed to or from BlackBerry devices are channeled through interim servers n Canada, messages handled by iPhones are exchanged directly between iPhones and company servers. "Somebody working at that (center) in Canada could be looking at your email," Jobs said. "We think a direct connection is better." The iPhone update will also provide secure wireless connections to business computing networks and allow owners to remotely "wipe" them clean, erasing all data from devices lost or stolen. Jobs said that Apple has sold more than four million iPhones, touch-screen mobile devices combining telephone, video, music, and Internet connectivity. The free iPhone update will be available worldwide in June, one year after the devices debuted in the US market. "This is the other shoe we were waiting for fall since the consumer iPhone was introduced last year," telecom industry analyst Jeff Kagan said. "The business market is a huge opportunity for Apple."
